is made using zebra wood creating the effect of the still water.

Beetle
Cat Sailboat
When I visited Cape Cod as a child I was
fascinated by the Beetle Cat Sailboat. I chose the Beetle Cat
because it’s a beautiful old-fashioned sailboat whose gaff
rigging is very appealing. By using wavy maple for the sail the
inlay creates the illusion that it’s holding air.

Cabin
Retreat
(Formerly named Fishing Camp)
The inspiration for this design came from
an old Maine backwoods fishing camp. This particular paddle has
custom painted lettering.

Mouth
The wood veneers used in this design are
mostly comprised of burls. They are uniquely suited to the texture
of the fish. The three-dimensional perspective seems to make the
bass jump right off of the paddle.

Loon
The loon holds a special place in the hearts
of many paddlers. Its enchanting beauty is created with the rich
tones of the black walnut contrasting with the lighter tones in
the flecks of the holly inlays.

Otter
My own favorite paddle is inlaid with the
otter design. I like the otter because it is so playful, and tends
to help propel my canoe after a long day of paddling.

Pelican
The image of the pelican roosting
on the pier is a classic scene familiar to most of us. This paddle
also shows some simple painted lettering personalizing the design.

Swimming
Fish
This design wraps around the paddle to
create the illusion of swimming fish. The intricate banding distinguishes
the main body of the paddle which is stained, setting it apart
from the inlay. I hand painted the lettering for the owners of
this particular paddle who live at Fish Cove on New Hampshire’s
Lake Winnipesaukee.

Trout
with Fly
This particular design is a perfect gift
for the fisherman in the family. The fishing line and hook are
made of horsehair let into the paddle. The Australian lacewood
used on the top part of the trout’s body, along with the
underbody made of sapele, create the fishlike appearance.
